Postdoctoral Position on Electrophysiology – [ Postdoc ]
Workplace: Milano, IIT@Polimi – Added on: 27/03/2020 – Expires on: 26/04/2020
A Postdoctoral position is available at Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT within the Center for Nanoscience and Technology (CNST@POLIMI) in Milan, Italy.
The Center for Nanoscience and Technology is part of the network established by IIT in close collaboration with Italian academic institutions. Research at CNST@POLIMI focuses on material science and spans the whole gamut of R&D, from conception and realization of a new material to its comprehensive characterization through to its final application in devices.
The overall research goal targets the design, fabrication and characterization of light actuators for controlling by light the physiology and functions of excitable cells. The activity includes the study of photostimulation in a variety of cells in vitro by light assisted electrophysiology.
In particular, the project will focus on the realization of light assisted electrophysiology experiments in a variety of cells activated by artificial light actuators of different kind.
The main targets will be:
- Measurements of plasma membrane electrical characteristics (capacitance, resistance, IV) in cells lines, cardiomiocytes and HIPSC by using the patch clamp technique;
- Measurements of plasma membrane electrical characteristics in presence of light stimulation in cells lines, cardiomiocytes and HIPSC by using the patch clamp technique;
- Supporting the cell growth facility;
- Contributing to the planning and interpretation of the electrophysiology experiments;
- Coaching of undergraduate and graduate students.
The selected candidate will be involved in a highly multidisciplinary team, including physicists, engineers, material scientists, biotechnologists, neuroscientists. Candidates should have open mind and attitude for interdisciplinary research. This includes the ability to interact with people having very different background and be able to build a synergy towards common goals. The ideal candidate will have specific interest into cell photostimulation mechanisms and into techniques for controlling cell functions (prosthesis, cyborgs, medical devices).
Requirements
Ideal candidates should have a PhD in Biology, Bio-technology, Bio-medical Engineering, Bio-physics or related degrees. Most important, he/she will have specific hands on experience in electrophysiology and patch clamp techniques, cell growth and methods for cell characterization. Sound communication and team-working skills, open mind and proactive attitude are appreciated.
